Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials reported that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. “A father frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events cause an average of US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week because of the severe damage from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
